Nokia N-900 Internet Tablet

Written on August 29th, 2009 by ADMINno shouts

Nokia unveiled their next generation internet tablet this week. xThe Nokia N900, like the N810 and N800 tablet before it, the device uses Linux-based Maemo software. Unlike Nokia’s earlier tablets, it connects to the internet over a cellular connection. It’s not a phone, it’s a tablet, but the GSM connections imply that cellular voice may be a possibility in the future.

Features include GSM, GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA connectivity (along with support for AWS frequencies used by T-Mobile), Wi-Fi, a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU, TV-out, Bluetooth, FM transmitter, GPS, a browser powered by Mozilla; full Adobe Flash 9.4 support; a slide-out QWERTY keyboard; Nokia’s Messaging service, which allows up to 10 email accounts; 32GB of storage, expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card; and a 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics.

The company says it remains committed to the Symbian OS for its smartphones, although analysts are starting to wonder if Maemo could eventually replace it, says MocoNews.

It marks the third operating system that the company has said it will support—just in the past week. On Monday Nokia announced the 10-inch “Booklet 3G”, a netbook running Microsoft Windows.

Nokia said the N900 will be available in some markets starting in October with an estimated retail price of EUR 500 ($712) excluding sales taxes and subsidies.

On 1 April 2008, Nokia announced a WiMAX equipped version of the N810 called the “N810 WiMAX Edition”, with specifications similar to the original N810, but the production of the Wimax Edition of the Nokia N810 was canceled in January 2009. Source: Dailywireless

Handset Manufacturers preparing for Ramadan

Written on August 29th, 2009 by ADMINno shouts

LG Electronics, third largest mobile phone vendor, has launched two new handsets exclusively equipped with integrated features that are almost tailor-made to meet the needs of Muslims in the region.

The newly launched LG GD335 and LG KP500N have special features, including a Qiblah indicator that uses an in-built longitude and latitude orientation or city references that, when used in comparison to the magnetic north, indicates the direction of the Qiblah. The two phones also come complete with Adhan and Salah prayer time alarm functions as well as Quran software, the Hijri calendar and a Zakat calculator.

With its slim 11.9 mm body, LG’s KP500N is a slim and lightweight handset fully equipped with key features such as a 3.2 megapixel camera, 3D accelerometer and an Active Flash User Interface with vivid widget icons to provide easy access to commonly used functions. The LG GD335 features a 2 megapixel autofocus camera that displays photos on a high resolution 2.2 inch GVGA touchscreen. The handset also has a MP3 player and can hold up to 1GB of music, photos or data. In addition, it has Bluetooth compatability and enhanced battery capabilities through the built in light sensors.

With Ramadan approaching, the features will be a welcome benefit during the month. The phones are available at major outlets across the UAE.

Nokia has been doing its Ramadan Campaign since 2006 and they have done it again this year.

Nokia just announced that its Ramadan applications for 2009 have now become available on Ovi Store. The updated free mobile applications tailored for the Holy Month of Ramadan can now be downloaded on the compatible Nokia devices directly from Nokia’s Ovi Store.

“Last year’s applications were very well received, as we saw over 2.4 million Ramadan applications downloaded. And based on the feedback we had received from Nokia consumers, we have further enhanced the offering this year to include additional applications as well as upgrades to some of the existing features. The applications this year also support a wider range of devices, to include both touch and non-touch Nokia devices,” said Chris Braam, Vice President, Sales, Nokia Middle East and Africa.

Nokia 2009 Ramadan Applications include the following:

The Holy Quran: allows users to read, search, bookmark and listen to Quran recitation

Prayer Times: provides prayer timings and Qibla direction for 1000 cities in 200 countries, along with the ability to add, remove, update and edit any location using the GPS.

Hadeeth: gives an easy and convenient way to read the Honorable Hadeeth from Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Riyad us-Saliheen, Holy Hadeeths and Arba’in An Nawawi.

Zakah Calculator: helps Muslims calculate Zakah on different kinds of income

Hajj and Umrah: offers a mobile guide with multimedia content and the most famous places that people can visit during Hajj and Umrah.

Mozzaker: allows mobile users to listen, search and translate a large collection of of daily Azkar and selected supplications. People can also download more Azkar and share via SMS and MMS with friends and family.

Cards: helps users create their own Mobile Greeting Cards for different occasions and send them to family and friends via SMS or MMS.

New features of this year Ramadan’s apps include Quran recitation from multiple recitors, which users can choose to download based on their preference and in MP3 form. Prayer timings and Qibla direction are provided for 1000 cities in 200 countries, along with the ability to add, remove, update and edit any location using the GPS. The new Zakah Calculator helps Muslims calculate Zakah based on their income. The Ramadan applications are developed by ASGATech, a Forum Nokia Premium Partner in the Middle East, with all content reviewed and approved by Al Azhar Al Shareef.

Ramadan applications for 2009 are compatible with a range of Nokia devices including Nokia N97, Nokia N86, Nokia E75, Nokia E66, Nokia 7210, Nokia Nokia 6730c, 6720c, , Nokia 6303, Nokia 6300, Nokia 6120c, Nokia 5800XpressMusic and Nokia 5130, . The user interface for the applications is in English, Arabic, French and Urdu.
Users can launch Ovi Store from the Download folder on the main menu on their Nokia device or access nokia.com/Ramadan on the PC. However when I tried searching for one of Nokia’s

Ramadan apps on the Ovi the search turned a null result. To make it easy for users to find the app, I recommend Nokia to feature them on the Ovi store to users in the Arab world.

Microsoft’s Mobile Office Comes to Nokia’s Symbian

Written on August 16th, 2009 by ADMINno shouts

Microsoft and Nokia announced an alliance on Wednesday to bring business software to smartphones and counter the dominance of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry.

The alliance between the world’s largest software company and cellphone maker, says Reuters, means the latest versions of Microsoft’s Mobile Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and messaging, will be available on a range of Nokia cellphones, which make up more than 4o percent of the global smartphone market.

For Nokia, the move brings the business potential of Microsoft Office apps to the Symbian platform. “This is really about creating a formidable challenge for RIM rather than anyone else,” said Nokia executive vice president Kai Oistamo in a conference call Wednesday.

For Microsoft, the move helps the software maker in its goal of fending off competition from Google and extending Office from the desktop into the larger world of Web, PC, and phone. “Extending that reach to 200 million Nokia smartphones was a natural for us,” said Microsoft corporate vice president Takeshi Numoto.

The BlackBerry has created the market for mobile e-mail, and its dominant position in the corporate sector, especially in North America, has protected it from Nokia’s attempts to crack the market in recent years.

The alliance also aims to counter Google’s recent move to free online software, like Google Apps, target Microsoft’s business customers, and Apple’s popular iPhone.

The Nokia alliance may spell doom for Windows Mobile, opines ComputerWorld. Symbian is the world’s leading mobile operating system and runs on nearly half the smartphones globally, while Windows Mobile hasn’t advanced beyond fourth place worldwide.

Nokia phones running Office are expected sometime next year. The first Microsoft Office product on Nokia smartphones will be its Mobile Communicator, which allows business users to find and then communicate with colleagues by instant messages.

The alliance brings Microsoft’s Office suite to a much wider audience than the users of Windows Mobile phones, which make up 9 percent of the smartphone market.

The two companies stressed that the new venture will not affect the future of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Nokia’s Symbian operating systems for smartphones. Executives said Nokia has no plans to make a Windows Mobile device.

Microsoft’s Word, Excel, and Exchange e-mail programs generate billions in profits. Google Apps may force Microsoft to defend Office, either through smaller profits or heavier investments. Microsoft on July 13 said it will offer free, ad-supported versions of the software suite, as well as a more sophisticated paid version, next year.

So far, sales of Google Apps have been tiny. Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Jeffrey Lindsay says business versions of the software will generate $140 million in 2009 sales, about half a percent of Google’s total.

Smartphones: Selling Well in Q2

Written on August 16th, 2009 by ADMINno shouts

New handset sales data from Gartner shows smartphones outperforming the overall mobile devices market in 2Q09, and were a key factor in consumers upgrading devices.

According to Gartner figures, worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 286.1 million units in Q209, a 6.1 percent decline over the year earlier quarter, but smartphone sales rose 27 percent over the same period, surpassing 40 million units for the first time (40.96 million).

Apple saw the largest rise in its share of the global smartphone market in 2Q09, rising from a 2.8 percent share in 2Q08 to 13.3 percent. With 5.4 million iPhones units in the quarter (a 51 percent growth), Apple retained the number three position in the smartphone market, which it has held since 3Q08. Nokia continued to lead the smartphone market but saw its share decline from 47.4 percent to 45 percent despite an uplift in unit sales.

RIM and Apple grew their shares year-on-year. It noted that Google’s Android platform, which accounted for just under 2 percent of the market in 2Q09, will intensify competition in the smartphone platform market when further Android-based devices come to market later this year, which could put pressure on Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.

Thanks to the release of the iPhone 3GS, AT&T added nearly 840,000 new iPhone customers last quarter, which accounted for about 60% of the carrier’s new subscriber adds, reports Information Week. But the iPhone won’t be exclusive forever, and traditional voice revenues are also on a downward trend, so the carrier said it will branch out to offer multiple devices that use mobile data plans in order to generate new revenues.

Ralph de la Vega, head of AT&T’s wireless unit, told Bloomberg. “There’s a plethora of those things that are just beginning to get to market that I think will dramatically change the industry.”

AT&T, based in Dallas, announced a deal with Plastic Logic last month to roll out an electronic reader in 2010 that will compete with Amazon’s Kindle. Worldwide shipments of e-books are expected to grow from almost 1 million units in 2008 to close to 30 million units in 2013, according to market research company In-Stat.

There are as many as 2 million gadgets such as e-books, security devices and utility meters connected to wireless networks in the U.S., said Roger Entner, an analyst at Nielsen Co. in Boston. The market, which generates less than $100 million in annual revenue today, will grow as much as 100 percent a year, he said.

Gartner says smartphones accounted for 12 per cent of all mobile handset sales in Q4 2008, compared to 11 per cent in Q4 2007 while U.S. smartphone sales, according to another survey by NPD, account for 23% of all handset sales in Q4 (up from 12% last year). Frost & Sullivan estimates that smartphone downloads from all app stores will reach $6.67 billion by 2014. Shipments of Open-Source smartphones may hit 223M by 2014, says Jupiter Research. Latest Devices – 08 June 2009

Written on August 3rd, 2009 by ADMINno shouts

A bumper addition. This is probably the most new devices (42) to hit our provisioning platform in a 7 day period since we launched in Summer 2007. The Palm Pre makes a welcome appearance and once again Samsung devices make up over 20% of the total. I’m constantly amazed at how many devices Samsung produce each with their own hardware and software configuration. Their production processes must be incredibly efficient and agile to support that much differentiation. They clearly deserve their 2nd place position behind Nokia. Nortel 4G patents may not be worth that much

Written on August 3rd, 2009 by ADMINno shouts

Embattled Canadian vendor Nortel may have held on to some of its key LTE patents when it flogged much of its mobile business to Nokia Siemens Networks last month, but there is some debate as to whether that IPR will be the nice little earner Nortel hopes.Source
